The coastline between Broome and Exmouth on the tip of the North West Cape is the most cyclone-prone coastal region on the continent. The cyclone season typically runs from November until the end of April. Swimming in Broome in summer

Swimming on Broome’s beaches in summer is not recommended due to a combination of strong currents and the presence of Irukandji and Box jellyfish, known as the most dangerous stingers in the world. If you do want to swim, you will need to wear a stinger suit. Don’t forget to check with the local authorities and lifeguards about the current swimming conditions.

How hot does it get? 

Broome has one of the highest annual average temperatures in Australia. The wet season is extremely hot, with temperatures often soaring above 35 °C (95 °F). 

Average summer high temperatures are around 33.6°C (92.5°F), while at night the mercury drops to around 25 °C (77 °F). March is typically the hottest month of the year, with an average maximum temperature of 34 °C (93.2 °F).

Does it rain all the time during the wet season? 

Broome receives most of its annual rainfall between December and March. But contrary to what you might expect, it doesn’t rain constantly. Instead, heavy, short downpours of rain mostly occur in the afternoons or late evenings. February is the wettest month of the year, with 197 mm (7.7 in) of rainfall.

Is it easy to get around? 

Heavy rain can make some of the roads in the Kimberley region inaccessible. Others, like the road to Cape Leveque, are permanently sealed and you can easily get around also during the wet season.

The Purnululu National Park, affectionately known among locals as the Bungle Bungles, is a geological marvel that has earned its place on the World Heritage list. The massive tides that squeeze through narrow cliff passages of the McLarty Range create an illusion of a waterfall that flows horizontally. The best way to fully appreciate the magnificence of the Horizontal Falls is on a scenic helicopter or seaplane flight from Broome.

Broome Bird Observatory 

Broome Bird Observatory, nestled along the shores of Roebuck Bay, attracts thousands of migratory birds from the northern hemisphere, including majestic shorebirds such as curlew sandpipers, red knots, and bar-tailed godwits. The observatory provides a wonderful opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat and gain a deeper understanding of the ecology of the region.

Between October and February, flatback turtles make their return to Broome for nesting season. Head towards the northern section of Cable Beach to catch a glimpse of these adorable creatures.
