June’s temperatures drop from the warmer autumn months of April and May, where daytime highs can reach up to 20°C (68°F) or more. The cool daytime air is fresh, making it perfect for activities like hiking, wildlife spotting, or taking scenic drives along the coastline.

June also brings higher humidity levels, often ranging between 70% and 80%. Rainfall is also more frequent in June, bringing with it plenty of showers. But rather than taking away from your visit, the combination of cool temperatures, higher humidity, and regular rainfall creates a refreshing atmosphere that adds to the island’s natural beauty during the winter months.

In June, Kangaroo Island experiences a noticeable drop in temperatures as it moves deeper into winter. During the day, temperatures typically range from 12°C to 16°C (54°F to 61°F), making it ideal for getting outdoors and testing out the many walking trails through nature.

At night, the temperatures drop further, with averages ranging from 7°C to 10°C (45°F to 50°F). The rainfall also increases significantly during the wet winter season, so it pays to come prepared. Drive to Flinders Chase National Park

One of the most scenic experiences on Kangaroo Island in June is taking a drive through Flinders Chase National Park. It’s one of the most instragrammable roads in South Australia. Sitting on Bunker Hill you can truly see just how stunning Flinders Chase is with clear views through to the Remarkable Rocks and Yakka Flats. You can enjoy a self-drive tour, tour bus or personalised 4WD tour through the park.

The Park covers 326 square kilometres with Cape du Couedic in the Southwest, where you’ll reach the historic Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, which was built in the early 1900s. The impressive rocky arch known as Admirals Arch is also home to a colony of fur seals that venture out at dusk and can be spotted from the nearby boardwalk.

You can also head to the Gosse Lands to the northeast and the region around Cape Borda Lighthouse to the northwest, sitting on cliffs overlooking Investigator Strait. It’s the only square stone lighthouse in South Australia and only one of three lighthouses in Australia to still have a Deville lantern room. You can enjoy stunning coastal views.

Wine Tasting at a Local Vineyard or Restaurant

Winter is the perfect time to hop from winery to winery on Kangaroo Island and sample the delicious flavours. Among the local vineyards to visit, Bay of Shoals Wines offers stunning coastal views and a range of wines including Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Savagnin, Rose, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Island Blend, Tawny and Vintage Fortified. 

The Islander Estate Vineyards is known for its cool-climate wines crafted by winemaker Jaques Lurton. Their Cygnet River Cellar Door offers a cosy setting to enjoy a flight of their wines, accompanied by a regional platter. 

Finally, Dudley’s Cliftop Cellar Door provides panoramic views of the mainland, perfect for enjoying a glass of their Kangaroo Island Wines. You can take a seat on their spacious lawn or deck areas and enjoy a guided wine flight as you soak up the views. These vineyards also offer a chance to learn about the island’s winemaking traditions and the distinct flavours that set Kangaroo Island wines apart.

Sitting close to the water’s edge in American River, Reflections restaurant offers a seasonal menu showcasing some of the region’s finest food and wines. Their bar and lounge is open for lunch and dinner where you can savour a wine by the fireplace.

The Enchanted Fig Tree is a popular choice, where you can dine under the branches of a historic fig tree, which opens into a collection of natural ‘living’ rooms each decked out and ready to treat you to a feast of the senses. 

For a more rustic experience, head back to Dudley Wines and experience their wood-fired pizza oven and a fireplace in their dining area, making it a perfect spot for a casual, hearty meal.
