August marks the end of the winter season in Tasmania. The temperatures are still quite cold, ranging between 5 °C (41 °F) and 11 °C (51.8 °F) and days are mostly cloudy with frequent rain and snow in the mountains.

Average daytime temperatures in Tasmania in August oscillate between -2 °C (28.4 °F) in Central Highlands and 15 °C (59 °F) along the East Coast. 

In 2020, many places had their lowest August temperature on record. On 7 August, the temperature dropped as low as -14.2 °C in the town of Liawenee in Central Highlands, setting a new cold record for Tasmania.

Is There Snow in Tasmania in August?

The best chances of seeing snow in August in Tasmania are in high-altitude areas such as Cradle Mountain and kunanyi/Mount Wellington. Snow accumulation remains under an inch in most parts of the island and coastal areas rarely see any snow at all. Launceston got 30 cm (12 in) of snow on 4 August 2020, its most significant snowfall since 1921.
