Tasmania’s winter season begins in June. Although the island is geographically closer to the Antarctic, it experiences higher minimum temperatures compared to mainland Australia. In June, days can get as warm as 13 °C (55 °F), with temperatures usually not falling below 5 °C (55 °F), especially in the coastal areas. Temperatures can occasionally drop to freezing when a cold front sweeps in from the Southern Ocean.

Is There Snow in Tasmania in June?

It occasionally snows in June in Tasmania. The central highlands and the mountainous areas like Mt Wellington and Ben Lomond often get snowfalls in the winter months. At sea level, however, snow is rare and usually doesn’t last long.

Dark Mofo Festival

The Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) hosts one of the most anticipated festivals in Australia, the Dark Mofo, in June every year. This midwinter festival celebrates darkness and light through numerous art and music performances. Highlights include the colourful traditional ogoh-ogoh monster procession, the popular Winter Feast banquet on Hobart’s waterfront, as well as the nude winter solstice swim in the Derwent River

Cradle Mountain walks

The Cradle Mountain turns into a beautiful snowy landscape in the winter, with endless possibilities of hikes through the frost-covered rainforest, from the relaxing Enchanted Walk to the challenging 65 km (40 mi) Overland Track snowshoeing walk suitable for the most experienced hikers.

Whale watching

June is the perfect time for spotting rare southern right and humpback whales along Tasmania’s East Coast, as they migrate north to the warm waters of Queensland. The best places for whale watching are Frederick Henry Bay and Great Oyster Bay, while sightings also regularly occur around Bruny Island and on the Tasman Peninsula.

Aurora Australis

Clear winter nights are ideal for observing the southern lights of the Aurora Australis. Tasmania's islands and national parks, including Bruny Island, Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, and the Central Highlands, have low light pollution and offer the best chance for watching the flickering lights illuminate the night skies.
