Summer (December to February)

Summer on Kangaroo Island brings nice, warm weather with temperatures typically ranging from 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). The island experiences long, sunny days with very little rainfall, making it the perfect time for outdoor activities and beach visits.

Beach Activities

The summer months are perfect for enjoying Kangaroo Island's beautiful beaches. Vivonne Bay is ideal for swimming or relaxing back on the beach with nice and gentle waves. You can also enjoy some snorkelling just off the shore. Thanks to all the fish nearby, it’s a great spot to do some fishing and you can cast a line off the jetty or from the beach.

Stokes Bay is a nice and hidden beach that can be accessed through a maze of rock tunnels. Head there at low tide where you can explore the rock pools and discover starfish, crabs and more. 

Another favourite is Emu Bay, where you can enjoy a nice long walk down the 4.5 kilometre stretch of beach, or even take your vehicle on for a spin. It’s a great spot to enjoy some kayaking and paddling along the calmer waters.

Flinders Chase National Park

No trip to Kangaroo Island is complete without a visit to the Remarkable Rocks. These impressive granite boulders are a must-see, offering stunning panoramic views and are particularly striking at sunrise and sunset when the light creates shadows and highlights.

The park offers plenty of different trails you can take. In Summer, it’s worth a hike down Platypus Waterholes Walk, which is a gentle walk leading to waterholes where you might spot a platypus, especially during early morning or late afternoon.

The Kangaroo Island Cup

Autumn is harvest season, which means it’s a great time of year to indulge in the island's local produce. You can enjoy tours and tastings at wineries like Bay of Shoals Wines and Dudley Wines, where you can sample the season with each sip. It’s also the perfect time of year to dig into the fresh local seafood with freshly caught oysters, prawns and fish available at markets and local eateries. 

Plan a morning out exploring the Kingscote Farmers' Market or the Penneshaw Market for an opportunity to sample organic vegetables, artisanal cheeses and handmade treats directly from the producers.

Autumn is an excellent time to visit the wildlife parks and sanctuaries on Kangaroo Island, as the cooler temperatures bring out the animals, so you have a better chance of getting up close to them. 

One of the best places to visit is Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can see koalas in their natural habitat, often with joeys clinging to them, and spot a variety of bird species among the eucalyptus trees. The sanctuary also offers guided nocturnal tours, so you can even catch a glimpse of the possums and bats. 

Raptor Domain is another must-visit, featuring bird of prey presentations that showcase owls, falcons and eagles. Kingscote and Penneshaw are excellent spots to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures. Bring your coat, your beanie and boots, the fires will be lit to celebrate Gutsy Kangaroo Island. This cosy festival celebrates the island’s food and wine culture and is one of the biggest drawcards of the cooler months. 

You can enjoy hearty winter dishes, local wines and entertainment in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Dress warmly and enjoy the indoor tastings and events. Engage with local chefs and winemakers who come out of hibernation to share with you. It’s the perfect way to combat the cold.
