If there’s one thing you wish for as you pack those suitcases and jetset off for some romantic time together, it’s sunshine! This is where Perth delivers in bucketloads. No matter the time of year you plan your visit - even if it’s in the dead of winter - you can enjoy the sunshine and get outdoors. In fact, with more than 8 hours of sunshine each day, it’s the sunniest capital city in Australia.
That’s not all it has to offer. Perth boasts more than 19 beaches just a stone’s throw away from the city, providing the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. There’s also plenty of wildlife waiting to be spotted, with just a simple stroll through any city park.
You can also soak up plenty of culture (between working on your tan lines), discovering the Noongar people, the traditional owners of Perth and the sacred Swan River.
Perth is also vibrant with bars, cafes and restaurants littering the neighbourhoods, dishing out amazing seafood, wine and more. It offers up a unique, exclusive honeymoon experience that you won’t forget anytime soon.
When’s the best time to visit?
Perth is beautiful all year round, well-known as Australia’s sunniest capital city offering up more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year.
If you have the luxury of choice for your visit, aim for the months of September, October or November. Nothing beats the colours and fragrances that spring brings with it, and not a hint of rain in the sky. Relaxation will meet adventure as you plan your days.
Top attractions to visit
Whether you prefer to beach hop between the pristine sandy shores dotted near the city, want to explore the cultural history of the area, meet the local wildlife, eat out at local bars and restaurants, or a mixture of it all, Perth has plenty to keep you busy.
Kings Park
Home to the stunning Western Australian Botanic Garden, Kings Park is one of the world’s largest inner city parks. It’s the perfect spot to take a wander hand in hand as you discover more than 3000 species of flora.
You are also treated to views of Swan and Canning rivers, as you meander through, along with the vast city skyline sweeping out to the east. There’s so much to see and do in the park, it’s worth setting aside plenty of time. Take off on one of the walking tails, or you can join one of their free daily guided walks to learn about the culture, design and displays they have.
Insider tip: if you’re planning a trip in September, then take a look at when the Kings Park Spring Festival is taking place. It’s a chance to see thousands of wildflowers in full bloom, with events, displays, walks, talks, activities and more.
Perth Cultural Centre
There’s no better way to enjoy a little culture than heading right to the heart of it at the Perth Cultural Centre. Here you will find the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Western Australian Museum, State Library of Western Australia, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Blue Room Theatre, State Theatre Centre of Western Australia and the Central Institute of Technology State Records Office.
You can grab a coffee and wander through the different spaces, or enjoy a cocktail and a live show in the evening.
Scarborough Beach
While there are plenty of beaches for you to pay a visit during your stay, from the most-famous Cottesloe Beach to Mettams pool, which is perfect for snorkelling, be sure to add Scarborough Beach to the list.
It offers up the picture-perfect moment with its array of colourful beach huts dotted along the shores. Once you’ve taken a dip and stretched back on the silky sand to soak up some sun, the vibrant coastline is bustling with promenades waiting to be explored, local eateries to dive into, and the stunning Sunset Hill.
Insider tip: grab yourself some takeaway from a local cafe for dinner, and make your way up to the grassy Sunset Hill. Laze back as you enjoy a bite while taking in some remarkable views.
Bell Tower
It might look like something out of a science fiction movie, but the Bell Tower in Barrack Square is actually one of the world’s largest musical instruments! Inside, you will find 12 bells from Saint Martin in the Fields Church that date back to the 14th Century.
While you can admire from the outside, to truly experience this one-of-a-kind instrument and enjoy sweeping, 360-degree views of the city, grab yourself an entry ticket and head on up. You can watch the ringers in action on Thursdays and Sundays from 12pm to 1pm and enjoy an interactive demonstration while learning about the history.
Once you’re done, you can hop on a ferry or river cruise right outside and take a trip down Swan River. The Noongar people, the traditional owners of this land, believe the rainbow serpent ‘Waugal’ created this winding river. As you cruise along, you can settle back and view the city from a different vantage point.
Day Trips
While Brisbane is a gorgeous city with a great mix of things for you to see and do, venturing out to the surrounding islands is a must-do during your stay for some incredibly unique and secluded experiences.
Rottnest Island
It’s one of the most well-known day trips you can take, but it’s completely worth it to meet the cute, adorable quokkas that reside here. Just a 25-minute ferry ride from Fremantle and you will find yourself completely transported to an island paradise.
This car-free island is easy to get around on foot or bike, or you can jump on one of the local buses that make the loop around. Be on the lookout for the fluffy quokkas, which are all over the island. You can even try your hand at the famous quokka selfie! Definitely something to write home about.
A day will barely do the island justice, with 63 amazing beaches primes for diving and snorkelling adventures. If you happen to visit in April, or August to November, you might be lucky enough to spot the migrating humpback and southern right whales.
Penguin Island
Just an hour and 15 minutes from Perth CBD, you can jump on a five-minute Penguin Island Ferry for a day trip to remember. Located in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, surround yourself with crystal clear waters and pristine white sand and enjoy the main attraction: the incredible wildlife.
Jump on a cruise to see wild dolphins and rare Australian sea lions, then get up close with the world’s smallest penguins. You can choose your own adventure! Whether you want to swim with the dolphins, or hit the water on a sea kayak tour, snorkel the reefs, or take a sunset cruise, there’s one thing that's guaranteed: it’s an experience you won’t forget anytime soon.
The Pinnacles
A little over two hours north of Perth you will find incredible natural limestone structures: The Pinnacles. These were formed around 25,000 years ago and are quite a sight to behold.
Head straight to the Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre in Nambung National Park to load yourself up with information about how this natural landscape formed before you soak up the views.
There’s plenty more to do around the area, as the National Park is home to lots of wildlife from kangaroos to dingos, possums, emus and more. There’s two stunning beaches to discover at Hangover Bay and Kangaroo Point, or if you’re feeling a little adventurous, you can enjoy some water sports or even skydiving.
Collie
If you packed your walking shoes, then tie them up and head straight to Collie for some world-class walking trails through incredible landscapes. There are more than 20 trails to choose from, with more still being added.
This regional mining town’s main attraction is Black Diamond Lake. Formally a mine site, you can enjoy its stunning turquoise colour that has come about thanks to the limestone in the water. After hitting the walking trails, it’s the ideal spot to relax back and soak up the sunshine.
Of course, you can’t miss the incredible Honeymoon Pool, which is part of Wellington National Park. It’s a great place to cool down during your adventures, and the name itself makes it worth a photo of the two of you together!
How long do you need to spend in Perth on Honeymoon?
If you’re planning on staying in the city of Perth then 3 to 4 days is plenty of time to see the sights, while also escaping to the many nearby beaches for a little rest and relaxation in between.
Of course, if your adventurous side is itching to get out and you’re looking to take on a few day trips during your stay, then it’s best to allow 7 to 10 days to truely explore all the culture, history, natural wonders and wildlife on your doorstep.
Saving for your Honeymoon trip
It’s time to be honest here, Perth is on the more expensive side when it comes to Australian holiday destinations, but it really does have it all, including endless sunshine - so it’s well worth the visit! With a little budgeting ahead of time, you can make your money stretch.
For a week in Perth as a couple, you’d be looking at about $3,000 including accommodation, but without flights. You might be adding those cocktails on top, so be sure to factor them in. After all, what’s better than dipping your toes in crystal clear waters with a cocktail in hand
