When’s the best time to visit?

Byron Bay is famous for its beaches and nightlife, so you want to make sure (as much as you can) the weather is nice and welcoming!

Thankfully, Byron Bay’s climate is pretty spot on year round, so you can’t go too wrong. The ideal months are from September to November, or Springtime in Australia. The temperature ranges from 20 to 30 degrees, with mild nights and little rainfall - even more time to work on that tan.

Spring is also the time of year when many of the music and arts festivals take place, so you can soak up a little Aussie culture during your visit.

Top attractions to visit

Byron Bay is a seafood lover’s paradise with the freshest delicacies served up just hours after they have been caught. With all the amazing cafes and restaurants to choose from, you will also be able to feast on fresh foods using produce directly from the local farms. In between gorging on tantilising delicacies you can fit in a spot of sightseeing at some of these top attractions.

The many beaches

It would be remiss to plan a trip to Byron Bay without scheduling in plenty of time for checking out their 15km stretch of sandy beaches. Dip your toes in clear waters, relax back on the shores, or even bring out your thrillseeker side and enjoy a spot of surfing. This is the place to do it!

Main Beach is where all the action is, but that also means the crowds come with it. You can enjoy mild waves ideal for the beginner surfer, with plenty of space to settle back and soak up the rays. The Pass is an extremely popular surfing spot, where you might even have the chance to spot a dolphin riding the waves!

If you’re on the hunt for a quieter spot, head to Belongil Beach or Wategos Beach, where you’ll find more space to stretch out in peace and cosy up together in newly wed bliss without all the prying eyes.

Byron Bay Solar Train

Want to do something a little bit different? Jump on the world’s very first solar train for the ride of a lifetime through a 3km scenic coastal track where you can take in some incredible views.

Relax back in their vintage lounges in first class, or settle into coach as you head through rainforest, coastal wetlands and part of Cape Byron Marine Park.

Insider tip: Operating 364 days of the year (not open Christmas Day), you can use the opportunity to take in a little more sightseeing. Plan to hop off at the other end, rather than just doing a round tip. At North Beach Station you can visit Sunrise Beach, or enjoy a spot of shopping. You can also make your way into the Arts Estate, which is home to Stone & Wood Brewery.

Cumbebin Wetlands Boardwalk

Once upon a time, before Byron Bay was transformed into the laid-back surfing town you can enjoy today, it was a swamp. Thankfully, a small portion of this history has been preserved, giving you the opportunity to be transported back through time and nature with a gorgeous boardwalk stroll.

The Cumbebin Wetland Sanctuary is just a short 10 minute drive from the centre of Byron Bay, and while it isn’t a long walk (only about 300 metres), it’s well worth the views through Melaleuca Forest. You can access it behind Butler St Reserve.

Insider tip: mozzies are everywhere! Be sure to spray yourself thoroughly before venturing out, so you don’t spend your days itching.

Cape Byron Lighthouse

It’s the most iconic landmark in Byron Bay, so be sure to make the walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse for a photo or two. While you can drive up to the top, for the full experience, it’s a much better option to leave the car behind, don your walking shoes and hike up the hill while taking in the beauty of the surrounding area on the Cape Byron Lighthouse walking track.

It’s an easy 4km return coastal trail that begins at Main Beach taking you past Byron Bay’s beaches. It’s also dotted with a number of lookouts, so you can take your time and enjoy the panoramic views in front of you.

If you’re feeling a little adventurous, you can plan a sunrise trip for an experience like no other. The path takes you down to the most Eastern point of Australia’s mainland, which means you’ll be the first people to watch the sunrise on the east coast!

You can venture further on the Gorge to Hidden Valley trail that takes you to the lookout at the southern end. You may simply prefer enjoy the 20-minute Big Scrib loops that take you across four creeks (not accessible after too much rain) and through the tick of the rainforest.

Perfect way to break up your beach trips!

Gold Coast

Another iconic Queensland destination, if you have a little time up your sleeve, make the 1 hour 15 minute drive to Gold Coast for the day. Head up to SkyPoint Observation Deck and enjoy some 360-degree views around the city with a glass of sparkling in hand.

You can hit up one of the famous parks in the area, from Dreamworld to Sea World and Wet n’ Wild. It's a great way to spend your day. Just be warned, if you venture in the school holidays, be prepared to be met with queues. You can be left waiting up to 2 hours just to jump on one ride.

For a little more natural beauty, Mount Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk takes you to the treetops where you can enjoy an incredible view over the forest, creeks and more below. Take the adventure further and head into the heart of the rainforest to the Glow Worm cave, where it's illuminated like the night sky in a stunning visual experience.

There’s also plenty of beaches around if you’re looking for an extra sandy fix, including Snapper Rocks, Rainbow Bay, Burleigh Beach, the famous Surfers Paradise and plenty more. You might even choose to stay a night so you can plan out a relaxing two days without rushing to fit everything in.

Brunswick Heads

Just 20 minutes from Byron Bay you will find this fabulous coastal village sitting right at the mouth of the Brunswick River. If you’re a fan of water sports, then this is the day trip for you.

It’s a great place to jump on a canoe or kayak, or settle back and enjoy a quiet spot of fishing. It’s also known for dolphin watching tours, where you can cruise along the river and get up close to these amazing creatures.

Make some time for snorkelling while you’re there, at one of the many beaches surrounding. Brunswick Heads is part of a natural reserve, which means there’s plenty to see beneath the waters.

How does all summer long sound? Once you hit the beaches and dive into that crystal clear water, you won’t be in a rush to head home.

You can make do with just three days in Byron if that’s all the time you have. It’s enough to check out plenty of the beaches, enjoy the local cuisine and even head off on a rainforest trek.

If you’re wanting to factor in more day trips and days spent doing nothing but lazing on sandy shores, then 5 to 7 days should do it. Of course, if you’re planning around a music or art festival, it’s worth spending a little more time to be able to enjoy it all.
