If you’re about to tie the knot and on the hunt for a romantic holiday you can scurry away to soak up those initial days of marital bliss, Australia is the destination for you.
Whether you have the time to check out multiple Australia Honeymoon Destinations, or have to hone in on a few favourite spots, here’s 7 fabulous reasons Australia is a great place to honeymoon with the love of your life.
1 The Beaches
Australia is well-known for its glistening white, sandy beaches that stretch on for days. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing the perfect beach to sink your toes into.
If you make your way to the Whitsundays, you have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the stunning Great Barrier Reef right from the shore. Throw on a snorkel and marvel at the marine life below you, or try something a little more adventurous and dive deep into its depths to get a whole new view. Cairns is another ideal spot to check out the Great Barrier Reef, accessible to plenty of nearby islands ready to be explored.
Fancy a surf? Beeline for Byron Bay for the action. Main Beach is a popular spot with mild waves for the beginner surfer, or head to The Pass where you might even be lucky enough to spot a dolphin frolicking in the water.
Sydney is home to the famous Bondi Beach and Manly Beach, where you can join the droves of tourists relaxing back on the shores and soaking up the sun and incredible views. You can also set your sights on South Australia where you can find tropical-looking beaches ready for you to dive in. Head to Flaherty Beach for blindingly white sands, Shell Beach to explore the gorgeous rockpool, or Almonta where you might even be able to spot a kangaroo.
2 Culture
Aussies are known for their easy-going, laid-back attitude, which is what makes the country such a great destination for your travels. It doesn’t matter which part you choose to visit, you will be met with a friendly face and make some good Aussie ‘mates’ along the way.
Sydney offers up the mesmerising Opera House, where you can catch a show or soak up the views at the surrounding Circular Quay, while taking in plenty of culture at the many museums scattered around. In Perth’s Culture Centre you will find the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Western Australian Museum, State Library of Western Australia, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Blue Room Theatre, State Theatre Centre of Western Australia and the Central Institute of Technology State Records Office. You can even catch a live show in the evening.
In Brisbane, you can soak up culture in the South Bank, stretching from the Queensland Art Gallery in the North to the Queensland Maritime Museum in the South. In Melbourne you can catch a game at Melbourne Cricket Ground and join the crowds of Aussies supporting their favourite team, or go museum and gallery hopping around the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Museum and more.
There is also so much history waiting to be uncovered, allowing you to completely immerse yourself in culture. In Western Australia you can make your way around the Bungle Bungle Sandstone Domes, The Pinnacles, and through the many National Parks dotted around. Make sure you add Uluru to the list of places to visit where you can wander around this cultural landmark and weave your way through ancient landscapes.
Of course, you can also head to a pub any evening of the week and find yourself immersed with other Aussies, enjoying a cold beer and soaking up true Aussie culture firsthand.
3 Wildlife
Always imagined what it would be like to feed a kangaroo or cuddle a koala? There are so many opportunities to do just this down under, with so many more amazing animals to check out. If you’re in Sydney, then head straight to the Reptile Park in Somersby where you can feed kangaroos, hold a python (be brave!) or cuddle with a koala.
Of course, the wildlife adventures don’t stop there. Add Kangaroo Island to your itinerary, where you can visit Seal Bay Conservation Park, see the birds at Raptor Domain, walk around Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary or feed the kangaroos at Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park.
You can even get that famous selfie with a quokka during your travels visiting Rottnest Island in Perth, which is just a short ferry ride away.
Don’t feel like heading to a wildlife park? There are so many incredible nature walks around Australia, where you can take off on a hike and spot plenty of wildlife along the way.
4 Great weather
When it comes to escaping on a romantic honeymoon for two, warm weather is usually the biggest drawcard. Somewhere you can bask in the sun, get out and explore, while also relaxing back and soaking up the rays. This is what makes Australia one of the best places to travel. It doesn’t matter what time of the year you go, it’ll be warm somewhere!
Often, your honeymoon is planned around your wedding, not the other way around. This means it becomes luck of the draw when it comes to weather in your chosen honeymoon destination. Head to Australia at any time of the year and you will find sun.
April to September is the high season for tourists, where you will find mild, dry weather around most of the country. October to March are low seasons, with extreme heat in some parts (Western Australia), however you can find perfect summer days for the beach in Sydney. It’s about considering what type of honeymoon you’re after (beach, sightseeing, hiking, animals, etc) and looking at the best places to find it around the time of year you’re looking to come.
5 Close to Paradise
Many people look at Australia and consider it to be very cut off from the rest of the world, making it a hard destination to get to. On the contrary, if you’re looking to get away for your honeymoon, Australia is the perfect place to explore. Plus, it’s so easy to add it on to an even bigger trip.
If you’ve set your sights on more than just Australia, then you can head to the Pacific Islands for even more rest and relaxation. Fiji is just a four-hour flight away, where you can settle back in Denarau or on the Coral Coast and enjoy cocktails by the pool as you work on your tan before heading home.
You may prefer more scenery and adventure, which makes New Zealand the ideal stop for you before heading home. Check out their stunning fjords and glaciers, feast your eyes on their rugged coastlines, snow-capped mountains and peaceful lakes.
6 Amazing Scenery
Your honeymoon is the ideal opportunity to explore new places as a couple and make some incredible memories that will stick with you for a lifetime. Australia has so much nature just waiting for you to check out, it’s hard to know where to start.
If you enjoy bush walking, head to one of the many national parks across the country. Many come with suggested walking trails, along with a guide to how hard the walk is (from easy to hard), so you can plan your trip and know exactly what to expect along the way.
While in Sydney, it’s well worth taking one of the incredible coastal walks, including from Bondi to Bronte, which offers sweeping views of the ocean that you won’t forget anytime soon.
Head to Barossa Valley to mix in some wine with your nature walks. Take off on the Barossa Heritage Trail where you can discover the history and incredible landscapes of the area, while visiting many cellar doors along the way. Take in the eye-catching vineyards along the way.
You can also visit Margaret River and venture on the Cape to Cape Track, which runs 123 kilometres along the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. Of course, if you don’t have seven days to tackle this, you can also access the trail for a short day trek for some stunning coastal and forest scenery.
7 Pocket Friendly
While a holiday in Australia will still set you back a fair penny, when you compare it to Europe - a popular honeymoon destination - your pennies will stretch much further.
If you’re particularly wanting to stick to a budget during your trip, then head to Alice Springs, Adelaide or Melbourne, where the costs aren’t as high as other tourist spots. You can also get around on a budget. Either rent a campervan and travel the sites in your own in-built home (save on those hotel costs), or look up flights from city to city. If you’re willing to be flexible in the times you fly, you can score some well-priced flights.
